I musn't run away. I musn't run away. That was Neon Genesis Evangelion episode 1! Honestly one of my favorite first episodes ever. The beginning of the episodedoes a really great job at setting up the ol' 'Giant monster is fighting military stuff', and there's no hugeexposition dump on exactly why the Angel is there, or what it is.

There's a great sense of mystery surrounding boththe angel and Unit 01 that i'm always a sucker for.Anyway, with my short thoughts out of the way, here's a few questions for the newcomers. What do you think of Shinji's relationship with his dad? And, actually, what's your take on Shinji overall so far? What do you think is the deal with the Angel? What's up with the fact that Unit 01 moved?.
What do you think of Shinji's relationship with his dad? And, actually, what's your take on Shinji overall so far?I like Shinji, and am immediately distrustful of his dad. We all know what reflective glasses mean. What do you think is the deal with the Angel? Is it, like, a real ass angel.? I have no idea about them. What's up with the fact that Unit 01 moved? My first reaction was that I thought it was synced to copy Shinji's movements for some reason, because he covered his face and so did Unit 01, but that didn't seem right. After that I was thinking about how everyone had been saying that Shinji was supposed to pilot it (and they had to reset it for Rei) so maybe somehow it knows Shinji's in danger and protects him? It's a heckuva mystery. It's obviously strained and Gendo doesn't seem to care for him much, but I don't know the full situation, so he could be putting up an act.
Shinji is cool, he's an actual kid being put in a situation where he's expected to risk his life. He's a good kid, but still a kid. I also like that he's actually pretty sarcastic, I thought he would be more passive.Angels are ALIEEEEEENS, calling it. Always Aliens. They say it's synthetic, and it looks pretty human for a robot, and has constraints, so maybe an AI? Or some kinda of brain in it?.
What do you think of Shinji's relationship with his dad?I'm guessing dad left Shinji in order to focus on the development of these Eva things and helping in the battle against angels.Shinji overall so far?Meh, what could you expect on a kid getting exposed to this sort of madness so suddenly. What do you think is the deal with the Angel?I actually have no idea, could be related to so many things: species from other planet looking for something in Earth? Human creation gone wild? What's up with the fact that Unit 01 moved?Don't know exactly why, but it definitely has to do with Shinji. After all, they said there was like a 0,000001% of the robot working (I think?) and that the Rei girl took 7 months to synchronize with hers, while this guy did it in his first try.
1.) It seems like his dad does not like him or care about him very much. As for Shinji, right off the bat he is really annoying lol.
This may be due to his voice or just the fact that he seems to really be a wuss.2.) Well I want to say it is literally an angel from god and its trying to kill humans for some reason. Maybe NERV was created to fight against god???3.) It protected shinji so it has to be connected to him somehow. The fact that it moved without it being turned on or whatever tells me that it has some sort of mind of its' own.Examining the show like this is a lot of fun!.The strained relationship between them is something I have not seen much from what little anime I've seen, the closest I can think of is Ginoza and Masaoka from Psycho Pass. It's interesting to see if it will be that way for the rest of the series.
Also, Shinji so far is quite a normal guy. He's about 14 right? Then it makes sense for him to not want to be forced into doing something he deems impossible.Don't really have thoughts about it yet, other than it's pretty powerful. The ending preview already spoiled that Shinji wins, but I hope it's more by Shinji learning how to use the Eva than pure luck.I've been spoiled about, so perhaps Unit 01 moved to protect Shinji out of. Woah, I just realised how messed up it is to. First TimerHey there guys:D!
So the Eva rewatch begins today and its a show I’ve been meaning to watch for a long time but I’m glad I can go through it with others! Before I begin I’d like to mention that a couple of weeks ago i watched through Gunbuster (also made by Gainax and Anno) and iirc it also was set in 2015 (at least at the beginning), which is quite interesting. Its kind of weird having 2015 being set as the far future, now that we have passed it, but I guess in the 90’s it might have seemed that way. Anyway, lets get into the episode:.So right off the bat we are introduced to this behemoth of a monster/alien that is called Angel. It takes quite a beating from the UN army but doesn’t flinch even when they use what seemed like some kind of nuke/mine. It makes me wonder if the Angels somehow evolved? As if the UN army used to be enough to repel an attack from them but this is the first or one of the first times where all the weaponry is ineffective, even if the mine did disable it for a few minutes as it recovered. We also get introduced to our protagonist, Shinji Ikari, and boy what a day he has had.
Gets lost while waiting for someone, ends up getting in the middle of the Angel attack, survives a mine/nuke explosion and a wrecked car ride to his destination all in the name of being able to meet his father, who he hasn’t seen in a log time. Only to be told, by that same father no less, that he has to risk his life to get into an untested machine/robot and fight the very Angel that almost killed him earlier and he saw survive that same nuke/mine. I don’t envy his life.Speaking of Shinji’s father, we also meet him in this episode. He already is coming across as quite sus, with all the light reflections on his glasses we get in most scenes with him. It seems he has spearheaded the Evangelion “project” and so he probably has a lot riding on the success of them. He also left Shinji, at what I can assume is a boarding school, since Shinji mentions his teacher, although Shinji could just be living by himself or someone else and didn’t have his father around. Either way, he seems like someone to keep an eye on as things progress.Lastly we also get a small introduction to Rei, who seems badly injured.
I can only guess it has something to do with her synchronising with her Evangelion, since Misato mentioned it took months for her to d.
In the year 2015, the Angels, huge, tremendously powerful, alien war machines, appear in Tokyo for the second time. The only hope for Mankind's survival lies in the Evangelion, a humanoid fighting machine developed by NERV, a special United Nations agency. Capable of withstanding anything the Angels can dish out, the Evangelion's one drawback lies in the limited number of people able to pilot them.
Only a handful of teenagers, all born fourteen years ago, nine months after the Angels first appeared, are able to interface with the Evangelion. One such teenager is Shinji Ikari, whose father heads the NERV team that developed and maintains the Evangelion.
Thrust into a maelstrom of battle and events that he does not understand, Shinji is forced to plumb the depths of his own inner resources for the courage and strength to not only fight, but to survive, or risk losing everything.
